"Roger M. Woodbury" <rmwoodbury at downeast.net> asked:
My wife's 100CS Avant Quattro has E-code (H-4 bulb) headlamps. Since they
were installed, the "bulb out" warning light has come on when low beams were
turned on. I assumed that this was because of the way the headlights were
relayed and wired. The original wiring job, done by my mechanic, did not
wire each headlight with separate relays for high and low beam. Only high
beam was relayed.
Today, we tried to change the wiring so that both high and low beams were
separately relayed. Despite this, the "bulb out" warning light and chime
still works when low beam are engaged.
My wrench installed the Euros in my V8, and this wiring was done the same
way. I also had Euros in my old Type 44 Avant, done with separate relays on
both high and low beams, all with perfect results.
Soooo. I gather that there is something that is different with the later
body style that we are missing. What is the resistance that the system is
looking at that is different in the two model series? What is the common
wisdom of cure?

I'm in danger of saying more than I know, but in my 1990 200 the solution to the bogus warning was
to remove the headlight warning relay and jumper across the contacts. I figured out which contacts
to jumper - probably around 1998 - and posted a solution to the list. The Hon. Igor Kessel also did
the same about that time. Unfortunately I can't find the file I wrote at that time. But if Roger is
right and this is an old topic here, someone should have a similar solution. IIRC, it took either
one or two short wires with spade bits that I plugged into the socket for the headlight warning
relay - simply defeated the warning.
