Hi All,
I am now the proud owner of a '92 A80Q, in addition to my longstanding '92
A80 2WD!
She seems to drive generally very nicely, amazing ability to accelerate from
standing in the wet (no wheelspin!) and corner with the throttle down. Fun!
However, I'm familiar with the 2WD, but not the specifics of the Quattro
transmission and I had a few questions for more experienced users with those
cars, if I may:
1. When accelerating hard up through the gears, there's a bit of a thump as
the clutch comes up/ power goes down. I can feel it a bit through the
pedals/ steering wheel and it sounds like it's coming from the rear parcel
shelf too. I'm hoping this is just worn front/ rear transmission/
suspension/ subframe mounts. Could it be anything more insidious that I
might worry about?
2. Possibly connected, slight 'thunk' occasionally when engaging 1st/
reverse with clutch down when car is stationary.
3. A little play/movement in the gearlever when off the throttle in 2nd, or
5th gear, no play in all other gears.
4. A very brief weird screeching noise, worryingly like the sound you may
recall from being a learner driver if you ever 'mis-clutched' and tried to
engage the gear without the clutch fully down. However, odd in this
instance, since I was off the throttle with the clutch down and drifting
very slowly to a halt at a barrier round a slight bend. Only heard once so
far, could be power steering pump? But could this be anything irksome to do
with transmission, etc?
5. Odd grinding type noise seemingly from rear when cornering hard and long
to the right (round a roundabout fast, for example) - wheel bearing?
Transmission problem?
6. Rear switchable diff lock only seems to come on intermittently, and then
after about 20 seconds (dodgy solenoid switch/ vacuum leak?).
In case you can't tell, I'm a little paranoid that I may have picked up a
rare Quattro with some kind of transmission issue! If anyone else has
experienced any of these, or if they're known problems, please let me know,
I'd like to start diagnosing and fixing glitches asap.
Cheers,
James
