Friends, we just got some bad news about our 1993 90Q. Either the oil pump
has failed or the overpressure valve in it is stuck open. We need to make a
quick decision on whether to change cars or fix it.
The car is a 1993 90Q in Pearl White, black leather interior, 5-speed, about
170K miles. Drivetrain is great, engine runs well, uses about a quart of oil
every 1000-1500 miles. Last year we had the dread head gasket oil leak and
had it fixed, so that's not a problem. Everything works.
I have been using Castrol Syntec in it for the last couple of years. Last
weekend I did an oil change and put in Mobil 1 10/30. My wife drove it for
two days with no problem. Then she went to pick up our daughter from a
sports event - and when she started the engine, the oil light stayed on. She
drove across the parking lot (100 feet) and then shut it down when the light
didn't go off. We had it flat-bedded to a competent shop. They've tested it
and it's hot a blocked oil filter or anything easy - it must be the pump.
Has anyone done this job on a 2.8 V6?
If so, how nasty is it?
Does the engine need to come out, or can it be done with the motor in place?
AND.....
Is anyone interested in this car? It has many good miles left, but you'd
have to get a U-Haul auto transport to take it home. I'm flexible on price,
but would probably take $1000 for it.
I need to make a decision by early next week whether to trade or fix.
Comments and (well-intended) advice are welcomed.
