Hi,
I don't know if the accessory belt will need to be removed for the
starter to come out. But there is an easy way to remove the belt. In
the tensioner there's a 10 mm hexagonal opening. About in the middle
between the center of the bolt and the center of the roller. Use a 10
mm hex key (or even better 10 mm hex bit on a 3/8" rachet) and turn
the tensioner to loosen and remove the belt.
I guess your mechanic hasn't worked on these cars before... Once you
learn of that 10 mm hex, you don't forget...
