Tom,
Yes, it seems I will either have to buy a new one and see if it cures any of
the problems, or just have Audi test mine. Frankly, since they are £80 an
hour here, it would likely be just as cheap to buy a new one!
I think I'll assume for now that my water pump is also of metal design and
that, as such, it isn't breaking up and causing problems.
