James,

In some cases the cap will rattle, but the brand new one I got from
the dealer was of a different design that didn't rattle. The only way
to know for sure is to pressurize the cap. Not surprisingly there is a
tool for that. The pressure valve should open at 15 PSI (if I recall
correctly). Your Audi dealer can help you with this (for a fee).

The water pump I bought for mine had a metal (brass) impeller.
