[V6-12v] Coolant drain plug gunge!

That's weird.. are you sure there is coolant in the block? Have you removed
the waterpump/thermostat?
When you do the shop-vac trick, does coolant squirt out of the bleeder
screws?
I'm guessing the engine is not fully assembled? I've heard good things about
those coolant flush products, but you need a working engine to pump it
through.
