[V6-12v] 90Q Code Radio SAFE Programming ?

Now that our '95 90Q is starting (and running)
again, I need to reset the factory code radio.
The documented code for the radio is given as "0X0Y",
where the first & third digits are zeros,
and the other two digits are non-zeros.
The last time I needed to do this (4 yrs ago),
I had the same problem: how to make this work ?
Initiating the code reset (FM1/AM) gives us: 1000
OK, what to do about the first digit, which is supposed
to be 0 (zero) according to the printed docs ?
The last time, I ended up taking the car over to the
local dealer, where the service dept. was kind enough
to reset it for me, gratis.
I seem to recall being told at the time that I can ignore
the first digit, because it's a zero.
So I just tried it, coding "1X0Y", and managed to
lock-out the radio for the next hour or so...
Now, the documentation tells us that the code digits
should include the set 1 through 9 (note, no zero).
Anyone on the list have recent experience recoding
a radio (successfully) with a code that includes the
digit zero ?
Another trip to the dealer's service dept. is a
possibility, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.
If I need to, I'll be sure to take better notes
for the next time this happens...
