My understanding is that, the newer the A8, the better the transmission. I think 
  2002 is first of the "good" years. The consensus seems to be that the A8s are 
complex machines just waiting to time-bomb -- lots of electrical do-dads waiting 
to fail. YMMV.

*If* someone claimed the damage on their insurance, it might show up on a Carfax 
report. But if not, it shouldn't be too hard to hide the damage. The real damage 
from salt water into crevices might not show for years. Same for corrosion of 
electrical connections. And mold will grow over time.

I would think that going over the car with a fine tooth comb would help you find 
any issues - corrosion, funky moldy smells, etc. But if in doubt, there is 
always another car for sale; look elsewhere.
