Kent:

Thank you for your reply. I went to see the car today and was not impressed at all. I do not think that it is a 2002 model. It is claimed to have only 60,000+ miles, but the wear on the door handle wells and the seats suggest that this may be the mileage on the second engine. I was also not impressed over the fact that the hood latch was broken and I could not see the engine compartment. The car also made a funny high pitch noise. I guess there will have to be a different car for me.

As you mentioned, the dealer also agreed that the things for which to look are the transmission for leaks, and all the electronics. The service person said to make sure that everything worked. By the way, I was at the dealers because my A6 had started showing very high water temperature since last night. I had to go and rescue the wife and children who had left on a ski trip and were about an hour away when the car alarm screeched and the high temperature symbol started flashing. The dealer said that it was probably a problem with the CPU, or the water pump, or the thermostat... They will not know until Monday.

My
understanding
is
that,
the
newer
the
A8,
the
better
the
transmission.
I
think

2002
is
first
of
the
"good"
years.
The
consensus
seems
to
be
that
the
A8s
are
complex
machines
just
waiting
to
time-bomb
--
lots
of
electrical
do-dads
waiting
to
fail.
YMMV.

*If*
someone
claimed
the
damage
on
their
insurance,
it
might
show
up
on
a
Carfax
report.
But
if
not,
it
shouldn't
be
too
hard
to
hide
the
damage.
The
real
damage
from
salt
water
into
crevices
might
not
show
for
years.
Same
for
corrosion
of
electrical
connections.
And
mold
will
grow
over
time.

I
would
think
that
going
over
the
car
with
a
fine
tooth
comb
would
help
you
find
any
issues
-
corrosion,
funky
moldy
smells,
etc.
But
if
in
doubt,
there
is
always
another
car
for
sale;
look
elsewhere.
