[V6-12v] Dead speedometer

Any ideas why my speedo has died on me. 95 2.6 v6 80e saloon. Worked smoothly most of the time or not at all!  Removed instrument cluster and pushed plugs etc...to no effect.  Dash lights, glove box and rear numberplate lights all working (understand they are on the same circuit). Trip mileage dead too, by the way.
