You people are terrific. I had the VW dealer do a scan and found that,
as all of you pointed out, the cam position sensor and the electronic
coolant temperature sensor (ECT) were bad. The dealer wants $450 and
$250 respectively to replace these two sensors. I have found them at
AutohausAZ for $59.35 for the cam sensor and $28.96 (Bosch) or $9.87
(FAE - alternate brand). I would like to do this work myself and
replace the oxygen sensor at this time.
Now the hard questions:
1) Where are these three sensors located in the car?
2) How do I proceed to change these sensors, any tricks on disconnection
and connection - pull this tab so, or, no pliers, etc.?
3) Any order of other equipment that needs to be taken apart?
4) Any spillages to consider?
5) Do I disconnect the battery?
6) Do I need to have the car at (I forget the term) TDC?, that is the #1
cylinder at top to replace the cam sensor? Help me out on this, it has
been a long time since I did any work on an engine. Or, do I just
unplug the one there and plug in the new one?
7) Does anyone know how to start this car when it fails? Hit this here,
pull that there, push it, etc., I need to get it into the garage and
even cold, it would not start this morning.
Thank you for all your information.
