[V6-12v] Sliding "lock carrier" out on A4...

It appears that I'll have to slide the "lock carrier" out to get this lower
cooling pipe out.  Does anyone have any experience with sliding this lock
carrier out?  Doesn't seem hard by reading the manual, but the manual can be
a bit simplistic for the most complex tasks.  Also, there is a "special
tool" listed (VAG 3369).  Is this "necessary"?
