Hi Scott,

I'd be glad to make you a copy. It really doesn't cost that much to make
and mail one, so right now they're free. Just email me with your mailing
address or I will give you directions to my house. I live outside
Charlottesville in Afton, VA.

I've had a chance to look at the archive and use it a little. The file is
in standard UNIX mailbox format. The archive file I have contains 13,866
emails that span from November 2000 to October 2003.

I opened the file with PC-PINE, a freeware email reader for UNIX style .mbx
mail files. It opens the file quickly and sorts the file by the message
headers. PC-PINE has rudimentary search capabilities that I tried out a
couple of times. It works, just not very fast...but, then neither is my
computer :).

I also found a program that converts UNIX .mbx (RFC-822) files to ASCII
comma delimited files. I pulled the converted file into a Microsoft Access
database...now it's searchable! A full text search for multiple words,
headlight and relay in the same email, returned 125 records in 29 seconds.
Again, not real fast, but useable. I'm still playing with the database.
Access doesn't have a good *simple* means of searching, so I'll look at
building a simple search screen. I'd also like to make them searchable from
the web. I was thinking of converting the emails into HTML then using a
search engine like Google. Any other ideas? How was the old searchable
stuff archived? Should we all load linux and learn grep?

Pine files and documentation are available via FTP or WWW:

                                      ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine/
or
                                       http://www.washington.edu/pine/

Just follow the links for obtaining pine software.

If anyone one has the archives from October 2000 and earlier, I'd like to
hear from you.

Jeff

You offered to rip copies of the V8 Archives. I would like to pay you for
a copy.

What city are you in, maybe I can pick up.
