My friend trying to sell his '91 5-speed turned away a guy with cash because he made some remark along the lines of "this will be nice for my kid in high school". Having owned the car since new and kept such care of it, he just didn't have the stomach to think of some punk kid (me 15 years ago, e.g.) thrashing it and not stepping up to keep it right.

That's a pretty low final offer -- I'd wait until January and relist it. That said, I have seen two 5-speed cars go for around $5k, one had barely 100k miles. The ABH cars may be generally more desireable, but few people, even many Audi people, are aware of this differentiation.
Part of the reason I love my car so much is that no one knows exactly what it is. Great during ownership, tough during a sell.
