This is a good time to think about adding an inline filter to your hydraulic
system. I did it about a year ago and I no longer have that black rubbery
sludge building up on my tank screen. I have been told by people who rebuild
these hydraulic parts that this stuff causes seals to leak over time.
I wondered about back pressure on the return line being a problem, but it has
not been a problem. My system is totally dry.
If you do it, get several feet of 3/8 hydraulic hose (NOT fuel line) and a
universal inline transmission oil filter with 3/8 hose fittings.
- Remove the tank
- remove the steering return hose section from the metal pipe (cut band)
- install new hose with inline filter (I routed mine so the filter is wired
onto the A/C drier hose where is is easy to replace and out of the way)
- Check fittings on the pump since you are right there and all the oil is
already on the floor (maybe replace the o-rings?)
- install tank
- Your done
Total cost of materials was under $30 and I no longer see the black gunk in my
tank screen. That has to be a good thing.
Those of you with automatic tranmissions might even want to put one of these
puppies on for a little extra protection. The filters have a bypass valve (and
a magnet) to so if they clog up you can still pump sludge through the system.
