About the Steak Knife Method,

I think I started this thing, I thought it went away when the list
server went down, but I guess it's gonna come back. I was going to send
this e-mail before all of that but it didn't get through. I see the
points of both sides - I have also done the blower motor both ways (about
4 right ways to 1 "hack"). The whole reason I have done the "hack" was
because it was cold, I didn't have heat nor time, and some things are more
important to me than a 13 year old car (although I do love my v8). My
point is this: I won't get to the end of my life and say "Gee, I wish that
I had spent the extra time to take the blower box out instead of using the
"steak knife" on the v8 (The v8, by the way, will be a heap of rust at
that point) - But I may say "Man, I should have spent more time with my
wife and kid".
Now I know That statement may be taking this to an extreme so don't get
me wrong, I think that there are a lot of things on a car that shouldn't
be
"hacked", no matter how much time it takes and I don't mess around with
things of that nature. I agree that I would never do this to someone
else's car - but as it has been said - my car is a beater - It's
mechanically sound but needs paint - I drive it everyday and it has 165k
on the clock. I take care of my things - I'm not cheap and I normally
don't "Hack". To prove this - When I first got the car(about 3yrs ago) I
re-did everything - every gasket and seal on motor and transmission (exept
The Pan gaskets) New t-belt with rollers, tensioner, etc. , water pump,
fpr, fuel pump, oxs, rpm sensor, - and lately have replaced the front
shocks, bearings, tie rod ends, and control arms - most all of which with
OEM or OE.
I'd like to know what anyone thinks of this:
The subject of the 4.2 with the transplanted 5spd. has come up recently.
I remember in one of the posts Keith stating something like he had to fix
the tranny tunnel(jump in Keith if I'm mis-quoting) - I surly hope that
this is not considered a hack, I know I don't. I mean the only way to
keep from using a reciprocating saw on this would be to replace the whole
frame, or cut the old tunnel out of the donor - and it would still have to
be welded in the other car. I have not met Keith in person - but have
spoken to him on the phone a few times, I watch his posts and am positive
that He is a great - non hacking mechanic with experience greatly
surpassing mine.
I don't claim to be the best mechanic - or even close - but I have
never taken my car to a garage for anything other than inspections and a
few alignments - The last car I had was at 240K when I got rid of it and
it still ran great - I must be doing something close to right.
Please don't look at this as any form of a personal attack on anyone,
that is not the intention of this E-mail, I'm glad to be a part of this
list and to know the people on it(all of them, Hackers and Non-Hackers).

                                                    Thanks,
                                                        Jason
