Picked up shamelessly from Keith's e-mail on this subject a few months back:

" Crank position sensor failure will always trigger a code. If the car is
running when the failure occurs it doesnt effect anything because the system
doesnt use it except when starting.

RPM/Engine Speed sensor will sometimes trigger, sometimes not. If the car
is
running when it fails the car shuts down. This failure is best diagnosed by
observing the tach while cranking the engine. When you turn the ignition on
the
tach should bounce once. As the engine is cranking the Tach should have a
very faint bounce. No bounce no signal from the RPM sensor.

IME a code will be set if an RPM sensor failure occurs while the engine is
running and no code will be set if the sensor fails during starting.

Keith"
