That is right Dave -
I dont even know what TLA (three letter acronym :-) Audi uses, but ECU and ECM 
can mean the same thing. PCM (powertrain control module) is another one but 
this usually refers to an all in one module that controls both engine and 
transmssion - like most newer fords.
I am completly un-aware of any engine control modules under the rear seat. The 
one and only "ECU" is located over the drivers knee brace panel. Automatics 
also have a transmission control unit located in the same place.

For your problem, I think you need to trace the wires to the diagnostic plugs 
and see if any of them go to the ABS unit - which is what I think you are 
looking at. Also - I thought the old ABS unit was located under the rear seat 
but the new one was moved to the center console behind/under the radio. Maybe 
you have not had this recall done?

As far as differences between auto and manual versions, it would be reasonable 
to guess that they are the same except for the PROM chip but the only way to 
tell for sure is to have both in your hands and compare or find someone who 
actually knows.
