Ed.
I just came back from Performance Wheel and Tire in Denver. I walked away with OEM A8 10 Spoke wheels 8x17 ET35. I thought that these beibg hub centric wheels and that they are the correct pattern 112/5 I should not have any problems. I did not get any tires at this time. THat is why I was asking the group for their tire sizes. I was planning to go with 245/45-17s on the 8 inch wheels. This is the same tire on my wifes '02 A4 (which was the reason I was at Perf W & T.) I got the Nittos for her ride. The last time was Sumitomos. they did not wear well on this suspension geometry.
I took the liberty to run all of these tire sizes mentioned here. <I use www.powerdog.com for sizing, try it!> How are you using this many sets of tires? Can I come over to use your tire machine? Who are you paying for all of the tire mounting and dismounting? Anyway, it looks like the 235/45-17 should give me the most correct ratio from the OE size.
Stop on up to the garage if you have some time this week.
Scott.

Yeah, I wish I had said something about my trip beforehand. It would have been cool meet and get dinner. Did you drive out too? Sea level is soooo good for these V8's.
That tranny is a sweet deal. Will be great to get your silver car back on the road. So you have another one now too? What's it like?
I have several sets of tires/wheels for the V8 as follows:
15x7.5 et35 aero wheels with 215/60-15 Yoko Guardex snows.
15x7.5 et35 BBS wheels with 225/60-15 Dunlop Sp5000's
16x8 et40 S4 5-spoke wheels with 225/50-16 Sears Yokos of some sort
16x8 et35 BBS wheels with 225/50-16 Dunlop SP8000's
17x8 et40 TSW SGV wheesl with 235/45-17 Dunlop SP8000's
17x9 et35 Mille Miglia Porsche Cup 1 replica wheels with 255/40-17 Sumitomo HTRZ2.
The last tire/wheel combo causes some very light scuffing on the wheel well liner that I only know about because I've seen it. I've never heard it happening.
These cars will accept some big wheels/tires. The only real concern is if you still have UFO rotors. Then the shape of the wheel center and spokes as they radiate outward from the center become important. Most of the time all that is required is a 5mm spacer to get the wheels to clear the rotors. A lot of the newer cars have different offsets than the V8 has. All the OE wheels for it are et35. A lot of the A4 (and other) wheels are et40 or et45, which means these will sit further inward in the wheel well. I doubt this will cause any clearance issue, but it may be a cosmetic issue. Again wheel spacers can correct this.
Do you have a pic of the 17-inch A4 wheels you're considering?

I wish you would have said that you were going to LA. I'm currently working a contract at Amgen headquarters in THousand Oaks, CA. I would have met you and had dinner/etc. Oh, well!
I'm the proud owner of a new 018 300 027 FX (AKA - An Audi Rebuild Trans code AYU) I purchased one from the same place that Dave Head did last week. I picked it up in Costa Mesa AZ this Saturday. I'm driveing back to CO this Saturday and going to install it. This screaming deal of $700 I could not pass up!
I'm also considering the fuel pump in the V8. I'd hate to have anything fail in CA. I'm sure there must be some CA V8 Audifans Members that would give me a hand/wrench help.
Ever since the Server/Software Upgrade I cannot get my postings on the regular list. I have sent 3 e-mails to get my account "Unlocked" but I'm not getting anywhere. Dan must be just too damn busy.
Ed , tell me ehat size tires/wheels are you using on the V8? I want to put A4 17" on the V8, but do not want any interference problems. Do you know the limits that others have pushed the tire sizes?
Thanks for replying.
Scott.

Doing pretty well Scott. Got the 5spd back on the road a couple months ago and it runs amazingly better now with the engine in proper time. Was a blast when I drove it to LA for Thanksgiving.
I've been thinking about replacing my fuel pump just because so as to avoid any unpleasant moments/hours with a dead car.
So you have 2 V8's now? Is one a transmission donor?
Got much snow up there?

I have seen in my VDub that the fuel pump produces very fine dust that will clog the filter. After cutting the filter open an inspecting the debris with microscope I discovered the dust was carbon. What happens during the end of the life of the pump the brushes are eaten away at an excellerated rate. So when it goes you will see this clogging of the fuel filter from the carbon brushes. Replacing the filter will just prolong the inevitable - You need a new Fuel Pump!
How are you doing Ed?

If you do decide to change the fuel pump, I strongly suggest taking the time to siphon the gas
tank dry or nearly so. The fuel pump is in a plastic cage that rotates and unclips from the
mounting base in the tank. Apparently there's a "special tool" to remove the cage, but I was
able to disengage it by hand while wearing a heavy leather glove. It's tough to disengage
(unscrew/unclip) but I was able to with the glove. YMMV.
On my 200, I went in intending to replace the fuel pressure check valve, only to find that the
one in there was not tightened down correctly. I installed the new one anyway, but suspect the
loose one was allow pressure to bleed off. The problem being addressed was lack of rest
pressure causing really difficult starts.
In the V8, I went in intending to replace the noisy-when-hot pump, but I found a think blanket
of lint on the small screen that filters the pump intake. I just removed that and returned the
new pump and it has been fine ever since, with no more noise.
