When the AutoCheck display goes whacky, it can be caused by bad connections from
the glass display to the controller board. That can be fixed by carefully
cleaning and shimming the display against the bezel with a piece of paper.
The electrical commections are made by compressing a rubber strip with inlaid
wires against the glass and circuit board. (this also applies to all sorts of
things with LCD displays)

The trip display however is a different setup (I think - it has been years since
I looked at it). From your description though, I suspect the actual display is
having the problem. There is nothing under the hood that could cause this.
Just curious, did the tech have a hard time replacing the hoses? Did he swear or
talk mean to your V8? If so maybe you can just spend some quality time with the
car and it will forgive you. Buy a tank of the finest premium and go out to a
fancy dinner or something. I bet that will patch things up.
