Sounds like you are on the right track.

Easy way to check if it's the sender or not. Find the wires on the plug in
back and hook them together. If the gauge goes to full, it's in your sender
or the connection to it. If the gauge is still dead, the problem is between
the sender plug and the instrument connector. The wires are Violet/Black and
Brown/Black.

Definately check right away. You didn't mention the milage on the car. If it
is around 120K, I'd suspect it hasn't been done. Get to checking it right
away. I have one with bent valves with 65k on the timing belt. It's not
something to gamble on.
