[V8] Not enough heat

I have a 1993 V8Q and I have a couple of questions.
First. I have seen several entries about using the Climate Control console
to get codes and other information from the Climate Control system. The
buttons I have read about do not match the buttons I have on the 93. I am
assuming there is a difference in consoles. Does anyone know how to get
codes from a 93 console?
Second. My heater motor was squealing so I took it in to be replaced. The
wrench suggested I replace the heater core also since I had 145,000 miles on
the car. I agreed. When I got the car back, everything was fine except it
does not put out near as much heat as it did in the past. If the temp
outside is in the 20's or below, the heater never gets the car warmed up
enough to get the fan off high. I took it back to the wrench and they were
willing to pull some more money from me in order to replace the heater valve
(which didn't fix the problem but it was leaking so ?????????). I suggested
that the heater core they replaced was faulty, but they were not willing to
go in and test it without another serious charge to my billfold. Any
suggestions on what I could do or test on my own to find the problem. I
would like to be able to isolate the problem, and if it is the core, make
them replace it for free. If it is not the core, I don't want to pay they
to tell me it is not the problem and still end up without enough heat.
