[V8] exhaust needed for 90 V8 quattro

Barely.  At steady cruise not really at all.  If I crowd the gas a bit, I can hear the change in tone, but otherwise it blends in with the rest of the road noise.  My tips extend just a bit beyond the rear lower valence.

Is your exhaust audible on the highway? My rear muffler fell off, and it is
VERY annoying on the highway, but I had heard putting straight pipes out the
back helps this.

The latter.  Any good muffler man can fab anything you want from the cats
back.  

According to some old email I was just going through, the center piece is
actually a muffler with the rear being just a resonator.  Not sure what kind
of sound you would be looking for but I've had the rear piece replaced with
straight pipe and I am very happy with it.  My center piece is starting to
rot out so when the time comes, I'll be exploring options there other than
stock as well.

I need a new exhaust from the CAT's back on my 90 V8.  It's pretty rotted 
from the joint between the converters to the rear of the car.  Most places 
seem to be averaging around $700-$800 for it.  Anywhere out there have them 
a little cheaper or would I be better off to have my friend make them for me

at his exhaust shop?
