[V8] Engine Oil Quantity

>From a distance, it seems that opinion on whether the V8Q should take 8, 8.5
or 10 quarts is mixed although perhaps tending toward 8 quarts.
Over time I've noticed how many times listers are replacing seals due to oil
leaks, in various places around the engine. It makes me wonder... My father
who spent much of his life as an auto mechanic used to warn me against
overfilling the oil because it could cause seals to blow, especially in a
"tight" engine, high compression, etc.
Could many of these seal failures be caused by us filling up to 10 quarts
rather than a lower amount? Any thoughts?
