[V8] Q Re Climate Control Readout

Would like help in two areas:

(1) The temperature display of my climate controller (in the dash) reads
fine in
the daytime, but when I switch my headlights on the display goes out -
nothing!
I seem to remember from years ago someone saying when a rear bulb (license
plate or something) goes out this can be a symptom. I have no bulbs out. Can
anyone advise if there is a separate bulb that lights up the temperature
readout
when the headlights are on? Or is it something else?

(2) One thing I've never understood very well about my V8 is the daylight
running
lights. The car was modified by Audi to meet Canadian requirements in effect
for
1990, which meant daylight running lights. At night, with headlight switch
off, it
appears as all lights are on that would be on if the switch were on (except
dashlights),
however, when the switch is activated, there is a subtle but noticeable
improvement
in the headlights. Maybe it's my imagination. Does anyone else have a
Canadian
car that can illuminate <g> this for me? I'm wondering if, besides the
wiring, the
headlights themselves are different from the American market, but that really
doesn't
make much marketing sense.

Thanks for the help.
