I caution anyone that is considering to use a K&N to think twice. Unless of course that you know 100% that your vehicle will never be driven in a dusty environment. K&N was designed to be used at the track in ideal controlled conditions, not on the dusty trails of America. I remember reading a study that was reported on another list that compared air filters.
The study compared 5 different filters - OEM, Cheap Replacement, K&N, Amsoil and a cheesecloth gauze. Standard ASTM tests were perfomed to measure Air flow and dirt holding capacity. Standard "Arizona Dust" was spec'd for the study contaminant.
Results (from worst to best)-
Cheescloth Gauze (best flow, but held no dirt)
K&N (slightly restrictive, but held some dirt)
Cheap Replacement ( decreased flow, and help moderate dirt)
OEM (more restrictive yet, but held even more dirt)
Amsoil (flow equal to Cheap replacement, and held the most dirt)
I don't use Amsoil, because they do not make that many filter types, but I always use a quality Mann filter in my german vehicles. Buy a good filter for your car unless you do not care about engine life.
Scott.
