[V8] Replacing the Speed Position Sensor

If the speed sensor should fail while the engine is running then the engine
will stop. If you crank the engine you will also notice the the tach will
not bounce while the engine is cranking (Dead speed sensor).

For peace of mind change both sensors together. Both sensors are held in
place with a bracket and offset. The one more toward the engine is the
crank position sensor and the one closer toward the transmission is the
speed sensor.

I just ordered and replaced both of mine figuring that I'd hate to repeat
the process if I only replaced one, then the other failed. Went to my
local Audi dealer and ordered them - about $180 each. They arrived next
day.

According to a manual I have, if they fail, the car shouldn't start (my
problem). It goes on to say that if the reference sender should fail while
the car is running, the car will continue to run using a reference value
stored in the ECU. No mention of what happens if the engine speed sensor
fails while driving.

Replacing both fixed my no start condition.

Later,
Arryn
