I know Steve has driven a nice factory 3.6 5-speed back-to-back with his converted '93 4.2, and word is that there's a very significant difference.  Even in a '90-'91 3.6, the increase in performance from auto to manual is substantial, and if you have the devices, the time/money expense would probably be forgotten pretty quickly.   A approximation in the increase in power (as a general term) seems in line with going from 3.6 to 4.2.

So taking a 4.2 to manual -- woo wee.  Might even trump a 3.6 to 4.2 swap in a factory 5-speed.   I REALLY need to drive Steve's car someday <hint hint>.
