There are holes in the pulley to hold it while you loosen the nut
*Clockwise*, it's reverse thread. I don't know what the OEM tool costs,
but I bought a tool off the SnapOn truck for $30 that works great. I
think the snapon guy said that the tool is used to take apart
differentials in trucks, or something along those lines. It's an
articulating X with two different size pins on the ends. The pins fit
into the pulley so you can hold it and unscrew the fan nut.
