I would NOT try a strap wrench - All of them that I have seen can damage the
belt surface of the pulley or crush/deform the pulley.

I will try to describe how I built mine - it costs nothing if you have some
scrap steel laying around, a few dollars otherwise.

First the steel:
Get some steel 3/16" thick by about 1" wide by about 12" long. I actually used
a heavy duty "L" shelf bracket but plain old steel stock from Home Depot or the
local scrap yard will work fine.

I am guessing on the dimensions here but - cut 3 inches off your 12" length.
Drill a 1/4" hole centered in one end. Drill another 1/4" hole 3" from the end
of the long piece. (centered)
Bolt the two pieces together loosely. If you spread the pieces apart they will
form a "Y". At the very top INSIDE corner of each arm of the "Y", drill a 3/16"
hole as near to the corner as you can but leaving enough metal so the pins
(next step) will not tear out.

Press in two 3/16 steel pins so the back side is flush (nearly) with the flat
steel. The other side of the pin should extend about 1/4" past the flat steel.

That is it. You have a fairly sturdy pin wrench. I actually used some wood
screws instead of the pins - just hammer them into the holes and hacksaw off
the excess length. Hold them in place with a little duct tape if they fit
loose. (I had to do this) This whole process takes maybe 20 minutes and you
gain a tool for future use. I also use mine on my Fords.

I also got a cheapo used 32mm open end wrench for the fan nut. I probably paid
$5 for it.

All in all, it is probably faster to either make a tool or go buy something
that will work than to fight it for days and potentially damage something
expensive.
