If you happen to have the "servotronic" variable assist rack, there might be an
issue here, but this was an option for '91 and newer cars I think.
Other things to look at might be the filter screen in the resevoir tank. Remove
the filler cap/level sender and pull out the screen.
Do you have the correct fluid?
The only other thing I could think of is the proportioning valve on the rack
steering shaft. (don't know the proper name)
If the rack is in fact the problem, people have reported good results with
rebuilt units from Jorgen. Ask around for contact info - I don't have it.
As an fyi, I instaled a generic inline automatic transmission filter in the
rack return line. It seems to cut down on the black gunk floating around the
system. I hope it make my rack live longer.
