[V8] Gas test?

First congratulations to Dave Head on the new Jetta. I love the TDI's and
was just looking on the VW site today to see if there was any further news
on some of the newer engines making it over here. Drove the 130hp version
in Italy a couple of years ago in a Passat. One of the few rental cars I
have actually wanted to keep.
Anyway - since I still have a V8.
I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with a non-runner and so far have
figure that the fuel pump is goosed. So I pulled the one off my running car
to see what the next problem is. (I don't want to spend money on this
non-runner until I have some idea of how serious the problems are.)
The dead pump is covered in sludge so I decided to drain the tank before
sticking my working pump in there - the sensor and surrounding areas are
quite rusty too.
So now I have 4 gallons of gas (sort of beer colored) that I don't know if
it is good or if it is mixed with water/who knows what. Anyone know of a
way of testing it, and if not, where can you safely dispose of suspect gas?
TIA
Dave
