Try straining the gas through several layers of cloth like an old Tee
Shirt. It might run your lawn mower. I sold an old truck once that had
maybe 10 gallons of gas that had sat in its tank for almost five years.
Guy who bought it drained the tank, strained the gas through the T-shirt
off his back and used it to drive the truck to his shop.

If you had sludge in the tank, I wouldn't put my working pump in there
without trying to rinse it out some with a solvent like acetone, maybe
sprayed around the inside of the tank.
