That sounds exactly like it is in limp mode. There are several things which 
can cause this. Sometimes just shutting the car off and restarting it fixes 
the problem. In my case, the electronic switch on the side of the trans had 
bad contacts. Started out intermittent, then go tto where it did it every 
time you would drive the car. My wife drove it that way for about 3 months. 
I got a good used replacement from Bruce @ Audiconnection, and haven't had a 
problem since.
