[V8] Manual tranny needs rebuild

It is made by Audi - but it is full of Porsche parts. You will understand the
implications of this fact when you get the parts bill.
FWIW, when they got my tranny, the guy called me after the tear down to ask what
was wrong. He could not see anything amiss. My 2nd gear grinding was probably
caused by a toasted clutch. I had them go ahead and replace the 1 & 2 gear
syncros and the main bearings and all seals just so I felt like I got an
overhaul. None of it was strictly necessary though. I already had to pay for the
teardown anyway.
I would have been fine if I just re-installed the tranny though - and about
$1500 richer.
He did find a small issue with reverse gear though. It was a little chewed up -
even though it is a syncro gear. They tried to put in a used gear (OK'd by me)
and went through several assembly/dis-assembly/re-assembly operations before he
realized that the gear ratio was wrong. He cleaned up the old gear and
re-installed.
I never had an issue with reverse before - except that it was hard to engage
when stopped - and it still is. Not a problem I think - just a charactoristic of
this transmission.
The only other problem (post overhaul) was that it started popping out of 2nd
gear on steep hill descents. (think Seattle city driving) That problem went away
when I replaced the motor mounts and re-adjusted the shift linkage. Plus I just
don't go to Seattle with the V8 anymore!
And, second gear is just not a smooth snick into gear. It does not grind or
anything but it just takes a hard pull to get it it. I used RedLine oil so maybe
that has something to do with it?
The tech did seem confused by this transmission though. It had a spacer that he
had never seen, the oil pump - which he knew about, and the reverse thing. It is
not exactly the same as a vanilla 016. Remind them to double check part numbers
and you should be fine.
