Yes, you should be careful, but there is no teacher like
experience. Dive right in, ask questions, make mistakes,
and learn.
When working on things electrical, disconnect the battery.
When you go to test your work, reconnect the battery and
be ready to disconnect it if you see smoke, although a fuse
should blow before you see smoke.
Two schools of thought - overly cautious and wild abandon.
Choose the one that you feel most comfortable with, or
pick something in between.
