All good suggestions, don't forget ventilation, a well ventilated
workspace or properly placed fan would help eliminate the build up of
fumes. 

My pump has been noisy for my three years of ownership, still works
fine.  I have driven approximate 50K over that period of time, now have
154K on the clock.

I would only add to watch out for static electricity. Wear clothes that
don't
generate sparks, ground the car to earth, ground yourself to the car,
use a low
voltage/explosion proof work light with a protected bulb, etc.

I had my pump out a couple of years ago to clean the screen - and I
really did
not like having my arm contorted into the tank full of fumes.
The screen cleaning did seem to quiet down the pump though.
