I don't know quite what you mean by the "ins and outs," but what got me
into the RV stuff was planning a 90-day driving trip out to the west
coast from my (then) home outside Annapolis, MD. I set up a
spreadsheet to compare costs between driving my car and staying in
motels and driving a motorhome and staying in that instead.
Visiting old friends not seen in years was the raison d'etre for the
trip in the first place. I based on a 5 day visit at each stop. In
the MH option, one night would be spend in the home of my friends but
the other 4 would be in the MH. In the car option, the other 4 nights
would be in motels. I allowed 6 mpg for the motorhome and 20 for my
3.6 V8Q. I allowed one meal per visit in my friends house and one meal
for 4 adults at a local restaurant in both options with the balance of
my meals either eaten in restraurants (car option) or in the motorhome.
It didn't take long to see that the analysis was not at all sensitive
to fuel consumption. The savings on motels and restaurant meals
exceeded every other consideration my orders of magnitude. That
convinced me. One trip would have paid for a $3000 trailer to haul the
V8Q behind the bus.
You've got the right idea about using one as a "track car" tow rig.
Get a diesel pusher and go. Converted buses are pretty cheap these
days.
