When I was the driver of the V8 Quattro now being flogged by Unka Bart, and
before it had been massaged into a Cobra-beater, I checked the fuel mileage
every filling against the trip computer. When I first got the car, I checked
the car manually, trip odometer vs trip computer and found them to be as
close as I could imagine them to be. Therefore, I decided to rely on the
trip computer because, well, with an automatic, let's face it: I am just a
lazy slug.
My driving involves few stoplights, and little "around town". Mostly the
roads are two lane, rural and unsmooth roads, and relatively rarely is it
even possible to encounter an Interstate...the nearest divided highway is
nearly 30 miles away.
On a daily basis, I almost never saw less than 20mpg...only if I left the
car idling for a long time in winter, for example. I don't think I ever saw
more than 23 miles per gallon, even with long distance, as the number of
truly long distance trips that I took in the car was few. By long distance,
I mean a full tank of fuel and more before turning for the return.
I always used super premium fuel, and was extremely loyal to Mobil when
traveling, but used an "local" unnamed gas station locally, as I knew that
they pushed a lot of fuel, and that the local distributor delivered premium
to a lot of folks around...this is rural Maine, afterall.
For this type of vehicle and this type of performance, I considered my fuel
mileage to be outstanding.

P.S. I rarely used "S" mode in the transmission....too tempting, and since
I never had any trouble with any of the wimpy "rice eaters" around, there
was no need. Besides, I was afraid of what it would cost if the
transmission broke....
