... there's no doubt it can be done without some of the tools ... and
I'm thinking the tools you are most claiming are not required are the
cam locking and crank reference tools ... and I agree that there's
little doubt the cam belt R&R can be very successfully done without them
... but having the tools in place guaranteeing the precise relationship
between the crank and cams is a level of insurance that can be helpful.
I know there have been times I've seen the cam pulley jump some number
of degrees due to some built up spring force in the valve train.  I know
for a fact that this will not be possible when I do my belt swaps.  It
does not add significant time to the job ... just the cost of getting
the tools.  To those who do the job without the tools, that's great ...
but I think it is equally OK to use the fixturing ... 

I justify the purchase of the tools in my mind by considering the money
I'm saving over paying a repair outlet to do the job for me ...
