[V8] V8 No Start / Transmission Question

I drove the car Friday and realized that I had a slight overheating problem, The car would steam during sitting in traffic but never went past about 5/8 on the Gage. I found that the electric fan wasn't working and I had a pin hole leak in the upper hose. Saturday I checked the fuses for the fan and all was well.

Saturday it wouldn't start, it cranks well but the tach needle doesn't move.

This morning I cranked it for 15-20 seconds and prepared to read the codes. My VAG-COM wouldn't correct to the engine, but connected to the transmission and read a persistent code of:

00545 - Engine - Transmission electrical connection, 02-00 Short to ground.

I don't think the coolant issue is a factor in the no start condition, but maybe I'm wrong?

Any ideas what would cause the engine - transmission electrical connection to short to ground.

How about why it won't start, and/or why VAG-COM won't connect the engine?

  Could these things be related?
