Kent,

A couple of things:  The V8 automatic has a four speed with overdrive (not
3-speed).  Also, the vast majority of v8s reported with tranny problems were
from 1990 (redesign 91-93).  However, a similar problem occurred with the
earlier A8 cars -- at least '97, maybe '98 (propensity for bad trannies -- 
often occuring around 70k and mighty expensive to repair).
