I have been holding out on reporting this - just to make sure the fix is not
destructive - and so far so good.
My Bose volume switch got so bad (noisy) that it was unusable. I used to repair
car stereos and have never had much luck with any of the comercial cleaners
available then (~1983) but since I could not get a new part for my Bose, I
decided to try Brake Cleaner on the switch. The result has been outstanding.
First off the scratch is totally gone - but more suprising is the overall sound
quality has gone up. I thought once the knob was moved and the scratch was done
the sound would have been OK - but it was not.
The cleaning is sort of involved:
-> remove Bose
-> remove top cover
-> loosen and fold back the small circuit board over the volume control. This
requires un-soldering a metal tab and un-plugging some small delicate
connectors.
-> Do the following work over the driveway or something that will not be hurt by
the cleaner:
-> Put the extension tube on a can of BRAKE CLEANER (be sure NOT to use any
other sort of engine spray cleaner)
Carefully spray a small squirt into the several openings on the switch. You can
actually see the wipers if you look carefully. Work the cleaner in with the knob
and repeat the process a few times.
Be careful not to douche the whole thing.
Cleaner on the tape drive mechanism would be a bad thing.
(it will wash off all the needed lubricant)
It seems to me that some sort of lubricant would be needed to prevent the volume
control from wearing out but I did not try anything. WD40 in an extreemly small
dose might be a good choice after the cleaning. I don't think it would hurt
anything, and if it didn't work the brake cleaner would take it right off again.
Anyway, this cleaning brought my Bose back to good as new.
