Yeah, it both actually, but the front was the one that brought my 
attention to the issue.  I had been using Dave Head's (thanks Dave) 
Garmin "Street Pilot" GPS Nav unit to guide me to a Jim Pasha's house 
in Lenoir City and was preparing to proceed to another friend's place 
in Atlanta.  Just as I was starting to enter the address, the unit went 
dark.  Replacing the lighter, it refused to "Click in" and so I checked 
the rear lighter with similar results.

That really sounds like the culprit.  When I use the central locking, I 
can hear the clicks/clunks as the doors, then the gas flap, and the 
trunk unlock.
Except, of course, when the trunk "clunk" is missing.  Those times it 
remains locked. I have learned to listen closely and now can tell every 
time whether the trunk will open or not.
