The spring supports the weight of the car and is mounted on the steel perch that the rubber mounting is bolted to.
Yes you can replace the mount (and the strut) with the vehicle on the ground. The type 44, 43 and 4A cars are the only cars that I know of you can do this.
The shock piston may move when the mount is removed, but you can move the piston with your hand as you position the mount.
You will have to get your car aligned afterwards though.
