That's how I was thinking about doing the VW caddy (rabbit) pickup.

Question is, which FWD 5-spd tranny would you use on the PT motor? I
was thinking the radiator would obviously stay up front (long rad hoses,
plenty of phosphate-free fluid), no power steering (the front end would
be pretty light anyway), who needs AC on da project car... Fuel tank? -
try to stick with the stock setup, or place a fuel cell somewhere?
Would it be dangerous to place it in the gaping hole up front, in the
event of a head on collision?

Someone needs to write a letter to Jesse James and see how many of us we
can get on an episode of Monster Garage :-) Or perhaps we need our own
Discovery Channel show called "Sprockets"; we could dress like Dieter
and have our own monkey! Heh heh :-)

Dave, I like the idea of finding the 4.2 which *would* free up a 3.6 for
the scirocco...

I was thinking FWD. The Caddy and Taurus all I know of, but either way
it's looking like the PT won't work sideways due to all the stuff that'd
be in the way of the VW's r/s drive axle.

I'm going to make a trip to my local Audi/VW yard to scout out possible
alternatives for powering the VW with my tired old V8:

1) Adapt a logitudinally-mounted FWD 4k transmission
2) Cannabalize a 4kq to adapt rear suspension and always-locked trans to
RWD scirocco
3) Transfer driveline of 4kq to quattro scirocco
4) Shut the hell up and find a 4.2 for my '91 v8 first.

-Dave

PS: I really do have to do something with this scirocco, and if I have a
slightly worn out 3.6 V8 sitting around, it seems like fate. One
suggestion I really thought was crazy, yet not out of line given the
outside-the-box thinking already was to put a FWD trans and 3.6 V8 all
in the middle/back. Then I'd have a nice big trunk up front...
