For what it is worth, I lost dash lights on my '90 V8 very suddenly on a
very dark night. Scared the devil out of me!
Turned out to be the dash light rheostat. The connections for that nifty
little control wheel were very, very frail and just leg go.
Part was not available from Audi. They only sold the rheostat along with a
complete board for, ifmemory serve, around $900 exchange.
I ended up getting the rheostat from a recycler in Colorado for about
fifteen buck, and paid the dealer about thirty to put it in. Took half an
hour, if memory serves, and never had another lick of trouble with that
car's instrument cluster.
