[V8] front shock insert replacement question

Nope... I did this too. On both my S4 and S6. It supposedly encapsulates
the strut tube and also prevents corrosion. I actually got the suggestion
from a guy who does work on lots of Volkswagens and Audis.
I don't know if it's really neccessary, but I don't see how it could hurt
anything either.
