I wonder if there was some junk on the threads when the last filter was put on... The friction point was obviously between union and filter if that little sob unscrewed from the block...

A double gasket would spew oil all over the place (ask a certain lister
whose name begins with a "J"), over tightening plays a part, but not
putting a film of oil on the new gasket is the main culprit when things
go as bad as this one did.
I always fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing (nice
vertical design on the Audi), avoids startup cavitation and lubes the
gasket.
